Introducing Subtask Agents: the new standard for enterprise AI orchestration

Moving beyond the monolith
In the traditional monolithic model, one prompt is expected to anticipate every possible nuance of complex use cases. When accuracy suffers or new edge cases are identified, more instructions are added. Deterministic control for complex use cases
While the probabilistic power of large language models makes AI agents capable of problem solving and natural language conversations, highly-regulated industries like insurance, banking, and healthcare cannot rely solely on probabilistic AI behavior. When highly-sensitive information is part of the conversation, stricter control is necessary. Subtask Agents introduce two-layer routing that combines deterministic logic with LLM flexibility.
The platform manages routing through four core components:
Activation Instructions: Natural language guidance tells the AI system when a subtask agent should take over, defining how multiple agents work together seamlessly within the same conversation.
Resolution Instructions: Natural language instructions define exactly how an active subtask agent should complete a task.
Restrictions: Deterministic gates based on variables ensure workflows are followed.
Shared Skills: Skills - such as knowledge, routing, or even custom skills - can be built once and assigned to one or more subtask agents.
Before the LLM ever runs, the routing engine evaluates the restrictions associated with each subtask agent. If a customer is not yet verified, the billing subtask with its skills remains invisible to the model, making it impossible for the AI to be guided or manipulated into an unauthorized stage.
Performance without the overhead
The subtask agent architecture also enables the agent and customer to complete calls faster. Fewer instructions being passed back and forth to the LLM and context-aware conversations that prioritize one task at a time speed up call resolution. In live tests, one Parloa customer experienced a 24% average faster time-to-call-resolution, with some conversations up to 47% faster.
Operating within a shared conversation state and persona, Subtask Agents also deliver more consistent experiences to customers. When callers start a conversation, they experience one continuous, coherent interaction with a consistent brand identity and voice, even as the underlying orchestration hands off tasks from a booking subtask agent to a secure payment subagent.
